Question
I work and reside at Cochin, Kerala. We have a 2 year old house at our native place (in another district) which is left unoccupied throughout the year. I want to take a Home Insurance Policy for my house. I want to insure the structure against damage by fire, burglery, etc. The cost of construction was around Rs 25 lakhs. Cost of furniture is around Rs 5 lakhs. No jewellery or valuables are kept at home. Household equipment worth Rs 50,000 and Air Conditioner, appliances worth Rs 50,000 need to be covered. Please advice as to which Insurance Company provides the best and most cost effective Home Insurance that suits my requirements. It would be most appreciated if you could also provide an idea of how much the premium for a year would be like. I prefer Government Insurance Firms like United India, New India, etc over Private firms.
Answer
Current Home Insurance products do not provide a cover for households occupied for more than 30 days. So we regret to inform you that it would not be possible to cover your house by any of the current Insurance companies and their products. Yes, this is an irony, as you need Insurance for your house more when it is vacant, but then we have to wait till some Insurance company wakes up and makes a product which covers this.
