Buying Student Health Insurance for any of the Universities in Florida requires compliance with the Board of Trustees of State University System.

We recommend careful reading of the requirements mentioned and then compare the same with plans available in your country. For e.g. The cover primarily requires cover on Pre-existing illness from Year 2, which is something missing in Indian Student Insurance policies.

A Student Health Insurance - Student Secure - Budget Plan from Multinational Underwriters completely complies with the requirements.

International Student Medical Insurance can be bought online at http://usa.insurancemall.in by clicking on the Students Icon.

You have convenient monthly and a yearly option to pay.

Here are the requirements as mentioned in the Handbook for International Students.

1) TO MAINTAIN VALID INSURANCE COVERAGE

As an F-1 or J-1 visa holder, the State of Florida, as mandated by the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the State University System, requires that you maintain Health and Accident Insurance coverage throughout the duration of the I-20 or DS-2019. As a student at the University of Florida, your insurance must also meet the University of Florida requirements. The University of Florida requires that your insurance policy meets all of the following:

  • Aggregate cap equal to or greater than $200,000 per injury or illness. This means that each illness or accident will be covered up to at least $200,000.
  • Includes expenses for repatriation of remains of at least $7,500 and medical evacuation to his/her own country in the amount of $10,000.
  • The insurance must be acceptable at all medical facilities.
  • Pre existing conditions must be covered twelve (12) months after enrollment.
  • Deductible not to exceed $500 per accident and illness.
  • Underwritten by an insurance corporation having an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-" or above, a Standard and Poor’s Claims-paying Ability rating of "A" or above, a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above, or such other rating service as the Agency may from time to time specify, or
  • Backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor’s home country.

Insurance coverage for F-1 students is mandatory. While proof of insurance is not mandatory for dependents of F-1 students, it is STRONGLY recommended that they also be insured as there is no medical assistance for international students or their family. Insurance for both J-1 students AND their J-2 dependents is a requirement. It is each student’s responsibility to maintain valid health insurance at all times. The Code of Federal Regulations states that if J-1 students or the J-2 dependents do not have Health and Accident Insurance coverage, the student’s program and visa status may be terminated. This translates to your registration being cancelled.

2) TO MAINTAIN LEGAL IMMIGRATION STATUS

Many changes have taken place with respect to immigration regulations. One of the most important is the mandatory requirement by UFIC to report to BCIS (Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services) if you should fail to maintain your legal status.

GUIDELINES FOR MAINTAINING LEGAL STATUS - F-1/J-1 degree seeking students must do the following:

  1. Attend the school authorized to attend
  2. Have a valid, unexpired passport
  3. Be a full-time student, completing a minimum of:

12 hours – Undergraduate (Spring/Fall semesters)

9 hours – Graduate (Spring/Fall)

  1. Refrain from unlawful employment
  2. Make normal progress toward completing course of study
  3. Have a valid I-20/DS-2019 and apply for timely extensions before the ending date
  4. Follow transfer procedures if coming to UF from another institution
  5. New I-20/DS-2019 required for change of degree program
  6. Report change of address on ISIS (http://www.reg.ufl.edu/addrchg.html) within 10 days of move.

For more information concerning legal immigration status, please visit www.immigration.gov or www.ufic.ufl.edu.

3) HEALTH GUIDELINE

Many illnesses surface because of a change in environment or an increase of stress. New students who arrive in the United States witness changes in time zone, environment, and diet that may initially cause sleep or digestive problems. Being kind to yourself, and allowing yourself adequate sleep and leisure time will avoid many trips to the Infirmary! As the school year progresses and finals approach, many students drop their normal eating, sleeping, and  recreation patterns. While a modification may be in order during stressful times, complete dismissal of these routines may in fact increase stress, decrease performance, or cause illness. The best way to stay healthy is to stay balanced! This permits you to perform your mental and physical best.
