How To Buy Travel Insurance?

Posted on April 21, 2009 12:52 by Admin

You are smart. You’re planning for traveling. But you don’t have any travel insurance yet. Sorry, to justify your smartness, you should have travel insurance. But before you finally decide to buy, there are some factors you should know. Below are the details:

Firstly how many trips do you plan to take during the next twelve months? If you expect to make three or more such trips in a calendar year then it is worth looking at the options available for an annual multi trip policy. When you buy travel insurance you are essentially looking at four major areas of risk:

• Cancellation or curtailment due to illness or injury

• The cost of emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation

• Loss or damage to your personal possessions

• Liability - that is the costs you may become legally liable for if you accidentally damage someone else's property or injure someone for example in a skiing accident

All the other sections of cover are basically non essential frills which are probably already covered on your household insurance (legal expenses are an example of this) or have such a low monetary limit as to be valueless in real terms (an example being a benefit of £10 a night for hospital inpatient treatment). Remember when you buy travel insurance to look first at the upper limits of cover for these four core areas of risk and you will not go far wrong.

• Check if cancellation cover is offered per person insured or per group of persons on the policy and if the total sum offered would cover the cost of a last minute cancellation which is likely to be the full value of the holiday.

• Make sure that if the policy asks you to disclose material facts that you have told them about any pre-existing health conditions which you or your close relatives may have.

• Look at the maximum sum which would be paid for emergency medical expenses. • Look at the restrictions on cover for cash, separately from other documents or possessions.

• Consider the value of the items you plan to take with you such as video cameras or computers as these may be higher than the maximum payable for a single item on the travel insurance policy

• Be aware when you buy travel insurance that it will not offer new for old cover

• Think about liability which might arise if you were to damage a shower screen in your hotel or your child was to break a large window.

• Finally - never go skiing without personal liability cover in case another skier sues you for injury which may lead to pain and suffering as well as loss of earnings. Such claims invariably require you to employ a solicitor and the total of legal fees and damages can run into millions Now, if you want to understand the nuances of different types of travel policies and its price, feel free to seek the help of InsuranceMall to select the right policy based on your need. Remember, insurance is not mandatory, but the cost of not having a cover is very high. Book your holiday, buy travel insurance and then relax and look forward to enjoying a great holiday!
