To make any health insurance claims there are certain procedures that need to be followed so that any claims made will be hassle free.
Claims can be serviced in both non-networked and networked hospitals either by claiming through reimbursement mode or through cashless facility. So it is important to understand the claims procedure as provided by the insurance company.
Documents needed to file a claim
- Original claim form & policy copy
- Bill summary listed on paper
- Doctor’s note describing illness & recommended treatment
- Original prescriptions from docto
- Original medical test report
- Medical test bills.
- Medicine prescriptions
- Doctor, hospital or nursing home bills
- Original discharge card
Steps For Filing A Cashless Claim
-
Keep your health insurance card with you at all times. Before you can file a medical insurance claim, most insurance companies do have specific requirements for you to be hospitalized for 24 hours or more.
- Request a bill from your doctor's office so that you can check with your health insurance company if the claims are covered.
- Go through your health insurance policy document to see if said treatment is covered. Some policies do have cashless hospitalization claims that you can take advantage of if your hospital visit was planned 2 to 3 days in advance or if it was an emergency
- Find out from the insurer how long it will take to get the insurance approved. If there is a delay, follow up with them.
- Fill out the claims form properly; the insurance company may not honor a form with errors. Talk politely to representatives in the customer care department of the health insurer. Tell them that you would like to speak to a higher authority if there is a repeated denial of apparently justifiable claims.
- Cashless claims are honored by certain hospitals only. Most insurers have a set time period for filing a claim, so make sure you do not delay or exceed that time period.
- Make sure you keep copies of the medical bills, claim form, receipts and correspondence in case there is a claim dispute and the insurance is not honored.
- Read about the limitations and exclusions of the insurance policy. There may be some diseases which may not be approved (e.g., existing illnesses).
