This year, there has been a surge in the two-wheeler market. The market has grown at the rate of more than 15%. Although riding two-wheelers is fascinating and convenient and in some case even a style statement, the one fact that cannot be ignored is, the rider is always exposed to the risk of accidents and ill-fated events.

There are certain situations that even the most cautious driver would find difficult to escape. Also, there are unforeseen perils like natural and man made calamities and thefts associated with motor vehicles.

A valid motor insurance policy is mandatory as per Indian laws and is as critical as wearing helmets and carrying the necessary vehicle documents. But there are only a small percentage of riders who abide by the law beyond the first year of insurance cover as they find the procedure cumbersome. It is a criminal offence to drive without a valid insurance policy.

A valid, comprehensive two-wheeler policy is a must since it provides protection against natural and manmade calamities like fire, rockslide, landslide, storm, hurricane, flood, earthquake, burglary, theft, riots or any damage caused to the vehicle in transit by road, air, inland waterway or rail, etc. The policy cover can also be opted for passengers/pillion riders. It also protects against legal liabilities arising due to third-party's injury/death or damage caused to its property. There are a few essential dos after the policy is purchased

Keeping the policy document in a safe, easily accessible location

* Note down the policy number to be accessed during times of need

* Note renewal dates, set reminders

* Keep the 24X7 call centre number handy for immediate support in case of an emergency

* When an accident takes place, a report should be immediately filed with the insurance company and a set of claim forms submitted to them

* If a third party is involved, a report should be immediately filed with the police. Simultaneously, notice should be sent to the insurance company

* An estimate for repairs and/or replacements should also be prepared and submitted

Most insurers send out renewal reminders to customers. Two-wheeler insurance renewals were seen as a very tedious job earlier, as clients had to go to the insurance companies or their agents or financial intermediaries for renewal. But with the advent of technology, and alternative distribution channels emerging rapidly, customers are able to renew their policy 24X7. So, they can renew their motor plan coverage as soon as they find it has expired.

It is no more an uphill battle for the customer to renew two-wheeler insurance. It is all about making the smart choice when it comes to the right insurer. This ensures the policy-holder is appropriately advised and assisted in procuring the policy. It is advisable to compare the auto insurance plans of different companies online to have a better idea. One should insure the motor bike only when confident about the company and their claim philosophy.
