The Importance of Home Insurance

Posted on October 10, 2011 08:27 by MKJ

Home insurance is something you never think you are going to need but when disaster strikes you are usually glad you have it. In the past few months, regardless of what state you live in you have probably seen on the news reports of homes being flooded in what the experts are classifying as a five hundred year flood. In other states wildfires have burned out of control taking homes with them in their wake as they burn through the state. Regardless of where you are you know that natural disasters can happen to anyone at any time and no one ever expects them to happen to their them.

Home insurance is often the only way a home owner can even plan to rebuild or restore their homes after any kind of loss whether it is from a natural disaster or something else such as a home fire or water damage from a burst pipe. When you look at the cost of home insurance compared to your investment in your home it makes sense to back up your investment even if you never end up actually using it.

You should get at least three quotes on your home insurance and keep in mind you should be able to get a discount on your rates if you are insuring other things with your insurance agent as well such as your automobile or multiple automobiles. Other factors that can affect what you pay for insurance include where your home is located, how old your home is, the assessed value of your property and even whether or not you have an alarm system.

Most of those factors you have no control over but you can have an alarm installed fairly simply that ties into your landline system, even if you don't have a landline phone, and your home can be monitored for fire or water damage twenty four hours a day by an alarm company. What this investment means for you is usually a discount on insurance because the odds of an event occurring without anyone becoming aware of it are now significantly decreased. Think of it as insurance for your insurance.

Your estimate for home insurance will include not only the structure itself but the contents of your home as well. Towards this you should make a list of your property complete with photos, serial numbers, and original receipts if you have them and the value of the item. Keep this list in a safe place outside of your home such as a safe deposit box at the bank. Keep your list updated if you buy or sell any property to ensure you have an up to date and complete list in case disaster strikes.

Talk to your insurance agent about what types of insurance are available for you in your area and what type of insurance they would recommend to meet your needs and income. Don't risk being caught unprepared and losing your home because you neglected to insure it properly.
